The Battle Royale's Niche Traversal Techniques Are Going Mainstream During This Update

Respawn Entertainment has an exciting surprise in store for the popular battle royale gamers, perfectly timed for festive season. Fans of the battle royale's highly fluid movement will be pleased to learn that a new movement mechanic will be introduced when the Amped season goes live on November 4th.

Unveiling Mantle Boosting

Named "Momentum Boosting" by the developers, this feature gives players a burst of propulsion when climbing over ledges and walls. As explained lead battle royale designer Eric Canavese, this technique has unofficially existed of the game for quite a while, usually referred to as "mantle jumping." But it's no easy feat for the average player, and typically employed by pro gamers in Ranked Mode or tournaments. In this update, Respawn simplifies the process for everyone to successfully perform these tricky movement boosts.

"This technique have been in the game for a while, but the movement requires skill to perform and gamers would never know it [is in the game] without external guides," the designer explains. "We're adding a Mantle Boost indicator so players can easily see the timing to activate the high-octane movement ability, making accessible the feature and adding new ways to play for more players."

Why Make It Accessible

What's the reason for making a once niche movement quirk available to everyone? Principal designer Josh Mohan explains the team aims for gamers to feel powerful — including ones who are inexperienced.

"[The playerbase] is doing other crazy stuff like super-gliding and tap-strafes, and we examined at our competition, observed what our players execute, and we wondered, 'How can we provide some of this power to more players?'" Mohan clarifies. "Since currently, some of these advanced [movement] mechanics are somewhat awkward to access — it requires to remap your keybinds and hit one-frame windows. We proposed, 'What if we make a polished version?'"

Season 27 Emphasis on Mobility

Movement is largely the name of the game in this season, with Legends Horizon, the defensive specialist, and Valkyrie receiving buffs to help keep them in motion. The cooldown period on her tactical ability has been decreased, and this skill will boost users into the air faster than it used to. Rampart's Amped Cover now include overhead protection and capability to provide movement bonuses to allies in range. But the spotlight is on aerial Valkyrie receiving the most attention this season, with multiple tweaks implemented to enhance her as more potent, quicker, and more lethal.

"I think there's quite a consensus that Valkyrie's time has arrived," states Legend designer the designer. "Certainly she was dominant previously, but with the introduction of new Legends, movement[-based] passives, and Evac Towers, it felt like she fell behind in today's Apex. This presented a really great opportunity for us to reexamine multiple elements in her abilities and essentially restore her to former prominence."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To reclaim her competitive status in the game's meta, the developer notes Respawn assessed each of her abilities and implemented significant modifications. Her jetpack have been upgraded, increasing her speed during flight, and this equipment now recharge three times faster, enabling her to remain longer in the air. Now she won't be harmed from her own Missile Swarm, which was enhanced to mark opponents who take damage from the missiles. Her squad redeploy skill — which launches teammates into the air for repositioning or retreat — requires much less time to activate. She's also getting recently added perk choices that users can select to reduce fuel consumption, widen the area of her Missile Swarm, or accelerate her Skyward Dive takeoff time.

"Her jet pack fulfills the pilot experience," Holstead says.

Olympus Improvements

Additionally, the only floating arena, Olympus, receives a mobility-focused overhaul, with an extensive redesign that expands choke points and renders securing elevated positions more manageable. Respawn state the game Season 27 focuses on providing gamers the resources they need to keep up with matches.

"Really, we were looking at the game's fundamental nature as a fast-paced FPS," explains principal designer the lead.
