Franchise leads Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are set to return for the latest Hunger Games movie, Sunrise on the Reaping.

Reports indicate that fan-favorite stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are returning to their iconic characters in the next chapter of the Hunger Games film series, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The film is currently in production.

A Major Return to Panem

The duo are returning as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the roles they originated. Speculation suggests their roles will likely occur in a flash-forward sequence, as the original saga concluded with their characters married and with children.

This represents the sixth film in the blockbuster Hunger Games franchise.

Exploring the New Story

Sunrise on the Reaping is based upon a newly published work by author Suzanne Collins. It will be the second prequel film after 2023's The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. For this project is Francis Lawrence, who has helmed the majority of the previous films in the series.

A New Era in Panem

The film's events are set roughly two decades prior to the first Hunger Games, centering on a young Haymitch Abernathy. Haymitch, destined to become Katniss's mentor, is shown as a tribute in the notorious 50th Hunger Games.

The cast also includes several accomplished actors in important characters:

  • Jesse Plemons steps into the role of Plutarch Heavensbee.
  • Ralph Fiennes takes on the part of a younger version of the menacing President Snow.

What the Stars Are Doing Now & The Film's Schedule

In other news, Jennifer Lawrence is receiving acclaim for the film Die My Love. Josh Hutcherson is part of the hit horror film Five Nights at Freddy's 2.

Regarding the shoot:

  1. Principal photography started in the summer of 2025.
  2. Filming concluded in November of the same year.
  3. The much-discussed film is slated for November 2026 theatrical debut.

Fans of the franchise can now look forward to the comeback of these central characters to the world of Panem.
