Eric Adams Will Support Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced his plan to support Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, even after months of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, describing him as a “snake and a liar” and accusing him of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now intends to appear with the former governor in neighborhoods where he maintains significant backing.

“It is crucial to really wake up the communities of color that have been affected by urban displacement on how critical this race is,” the mayor remarked.

He added, “They have watched their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and groups and I will appear with the former governor in those areas and get them engaged.”

Race Dynamics and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has attracted attention internationally and represented hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democratic party.

During a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa announced they would decline the mayor's support if extended.

Months ago, Adams had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing legal accusations which were later thrown out in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.

At an unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor answered journalists asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew this evening.”

The announcement came a day after the two politicians were spotted sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which took place right after a heated mayoral debate.
