Three police officers lost their lives and more than a dozen additional individuals were hurt in a seemingly deliberate detonation from gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property near the city of Verona to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were taken into custody at the location and a third person who escaped subsequent to the blast was apprehended shortly later. The trio have been taken to hospital.

The explosion could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location showed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The head of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was under an court order due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Mediators had been assigned to talk with the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings set off the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander informed reporters.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also found at the residence, the interior minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The official was convinced the explosion had taken place on a level above the doorway and told journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned officers had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to reporters, adding that the three had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in commemorating the trio of personnel who had died in the service of their country.
